When it came to planning the Make This Look Challenge, I wanted to use an MTL pattern that I already had, and fabric from my stash. I had the McCall’s 6503 pattern, and some dark blue cotton lawn in my stash. It’s not a solid, but close enough. This was an easy dress to put together. I love how the ruffle is simply cut from a circle and then just does it’s own thing when you pull it straight. The armholes are completed with bias tape, which is so fast and easy and look so much better than armhole facings.

I lined the skirt to give it a little more body and opacity. The pattern doesn’t call for it, but I decided that I would add it. I serged the lining together with the skirt at the waist, and then I gathered it. That made it so neat, with no raw edges. I do most of my sewing these days with both machines. I use the serger any time I can get away with it.

I’ve yet to get the sizing exactly right. I’m afraid I’ll make something too small, so I tend to cut generously. I’m going to get it exactly right one of these days. For the photo shoots, I sometimes use a clothespin in the back to pull in any looseness. When I make this look again, I’ll know to cut it a bit smaller.

I missed the sunny day opportunity for the outdoor shots, so I had to settle for some indoor shots. I can’t wait until the weather warms up.
